Death by daytime radio

I wrote this about 3 to 4 months ago but never got round to publishing it. Better late than never eh?.

It is fucking annoying how many bands have had their music ruined by overexposure in the last couple of years. The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, We are Scientists, Editors, Kasabian, Razorlight, Alkaline Trio, Maximo Park, Nine Black Alps, My Chemical Romance, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Jack Johnson, José González, Royksopp, The Bravery, The Departure, The Futureheads, The Subways etc etc etc… the list is endless…

Currently being kicked to death by bandwagon daytime DJs are Sigur Ros, The Kooks, The Raconteurs, Boy Kill Boy, Wolfmother, The Automatic etc etc

Who’s next up for the chop? I reckon the following:

  1. Milburn
  2. The Fratellis
  3. Forward Russia!
  4. Plan B
  5. Blackbud
  6. Guillemots
  7. The Sunshine Underground
  8. Battle
  9. Hot Chip
  10. Yeti
  11. The Rakes

I’ll be bookmarking this post to use as a told-ya-so in months to come.

You can bookmark it to use it as a what-the-fuck-were-you-on?

Three year drought ended

Ooh baby don’t you know I suffer?
Ooh baby can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretences
How long before you let me go?

Oohh you set my soul alight
Oohh you set my soul alight
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
Oohh..
And the superstar sucked into the supermassive
..you set my soul alight
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
Oohh..
And the superstar sucked into the supermassive
..you set my soul alight

Mix a bit of upbeat disco-ey funk, a Marilyn Manson influenced intro, and wailing vocals and you have the new Muse single.

A Muse track you can dance to.

Who’d have thought it?

(Still kicks ass though)

Never meet your heroes…

…and you’ll always be disappointed.

Apologies in advance if this post seems really sycophantic, but fuck it. I’m still smiling.

Last night I went to see Frank Turner with Rich, Laura, Kylie, Julie and Tony.

Frank was walking around whilst the support act, the excellent Gabby Young Collective, were playing, so I thought I’d go over and say hi. To be honest I half expected him to be arrogant, but he turned out to be incredibly friendly and approachable.  He told me about what really happened behind the scenes when he played his awesome live lounge set for Mike Davies’ Lock up. You got the sense that he genuinely gave a shit about his fans, which was a refreshing change. I later bought him a drink, and a copy of his 5 track CD. Talented and a nice guy. Chesney Hawkes take note, you were neither…

First up was the guitarist from the Gabby Young Collective; Michelle Lewis had to cancel, and so this guy stood in. He was pretty good, though none of his songs other than a cover stuck in my head. Next up were the GYC, who played a really good set. Gabby has an excellent voice, and a decent band behind her, and although it’s not really my style of music, they were still pretty damn good. She seemed like quite a nice person as well.

Finally Frank Turner took to the stage, and blew everyone away. The man is a fucking genius. He was stage for a good hour and played mostly original material, with a couple of covers thrown in. Stand out tracks were The Real Damage, Romantic Fatigue, Thatcher Fucked the Kids, After The Rush Hour, Casanova’s Lament and Nashville Tennessee. Oh and that fucking amazing cover of Dancing Queen, in which he holds a note at the end for an eternity.

Hopefully I’m gonna get to see him play again at Collision Course.

An awesome gig. Left me with a smile on my face despite the fact that I’d been ripped off for £400 earlier in the day.

Yessssss Bossssss

Went to the 3rd Tuckshop with Henry on Thursday, to see The Sunshine Underground, Apartment, Marvin and the Gayes, and Yes Boss.

“Two Leeds lads who are startling indie audiences everywhere with an crafty blend of sing-a-long choruses, interspersed with intelligent and witty white boy rap.”

I really wasn’t expecting to like these guys; the BBC description didn’t exactly fill me with confidence. “Intelligent and witty white boy rap” are words that don’t tend to go together that well.  Yes Boss were either going to be atrocious or awesome.  They turned out to be the latter.  Imagine a Leeds version of GLC.  But talented.  And actually funny.  Well worth seeing.  The vocalist seemed like a nice guy as well, and tried to buy some weed off Henry.

The first band were pretty good too.  Marvin and the GayesWhen I say Marvin, you say Gaye.  Marvin.  Gaye.  Marvin.  Gaye.  Sounds crap, but it worked. Kinda like Bloc Party.  But with a bit of funk.  And a cool keyboard player.  Shame that the lovely Myspace people twats keep on deleting their profile as it contains the highly offensive word “gaye”…

The Sunshine Underground were headlining, and played pretty well.  Commercial Breakdown and I Ain’t Losing Any Sleep were the stand out tracks.  It seemed like I was the only guy in the audience who knew their music though, which was a little strange.  At the end of their set, they did a collaboration with Yes Boss, which was kinda cool.

Where the fuck were Apartment though?
